Jascots Wine Merchants will be the Barbican‘s main wine supplier for the next four years, after winning a tender run by the City of London Corporation. The contract is worth a six-figure sum.

Jascots will supply the arts centre’s eight bars, its two cinemas and a number of mobile bars around the site, which the Barbican says welcomes almost 30,000 visitors a week. Jascots says it is the biggest contract it has won for a single hospitality site in recent years.

Sustainability in the tender

Both organisations say sustainability played a major part in the appointment. The wine list runs from everyday bottles to fine wines, with producers including South Africa’s Spier Wine Farm, which is known for regenerative farming, Argentinian organic and Fairtrade-certified producer Viña Artesano, and English winery Bolney Wine Estate, which recently received WineGB’s Gold Standard accreditation.

The City of London has set targets of net zero carbon emissions from its own operations by 2027, and of cutting emissions across its supply chain by 2040.

Adrian Morgan, head of commercial development at the Barbican, said Jascots had shown “a genuine commitment to sustainability”, as well as offering a wide range of good wines.

As part of the deal, Jascots will also train the Barbican’s bar and hospitality staff, including through WSET wine qualifications.
