Sheffield has hosted four medical and research conferences over the past month, according to Welcome to Sheffield: the National Children’s Hospital Alliance Education Specialists Symposium, the 11th UK Congress on Obesity, the Paediatric Pathology Society Annual Meeting and the International Collaborative Research Initiative (ICRI) Annual Conference.

Welcome to Sheffield says the city’s conference ambassadors – local academics and clinicians who bring events to the city through their professional associations – played a key part in attracting them.

The Paediatric Pathology Society meeting, held from 17-19 September, came to Sheffield thanks to Marta Cohen, a consultant paediatric pathologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. She has used the ambassador programme to bring several events to the city, including the International Stillbirth Alliance Conference in 2023.

The UK Congress on Obesity, the Association for the Study of Obesity’s main event of the year, took place at Cutlers’ Hall on 17-18 September. Its local organising committee was co-led by Dr Laura Gray of the University of Sheffield and Dr Catherine Homer of Sheffield Hallam University.
