UKinbound responds to proposed £36,700 minimum salary for immigrants
A new report has been released by The Centre for Social Justice, called Prioritising Growth – The Future of Immigration Policy.
The lengthy report makes many recommendations around immigration policy, including a proposal to increase the salary threshold to £36,700 for migrants who want to work in the UK.
Joss Croft, UKinbound CEO, says this could have a huge negative impact on the hospitality sector, which requires many essential roles that would fall under the salary threshold.
The minimum threshold was previously proposed at £30,000, but this too was disputed by many in the hospitality industry as being still too high.
Croft said: “The debate about what the UK’s future immigration policy should look like once we leave the European Union is complicated, with no easy answers.
“We note with interest today’s report from The Centre for Social Justice, and whilst we welcome their recommendations to increase the support for refugees and more penalties for illegal employment practices, their proposal to increase the salary threshold to £36,700 for migrant workers who want to work in the UK will be an impossible challenge for the inbound tourism industry.
“The Centre for Social Justice proposes that increasing this salary threshold will encourage employers to hire more British workers. This might work for some industries, but our members already struggle to recruit home grown employees with language and culturally sensitive service skills that they, particularly tour operators and accommodation providers, need.”
The Centre for Social Justice describes itself as “an independent think tank that studies the root causes of Britain’s social problems and addresses them by recommending practical, workable policy interventions”.
