Sustainability: accreditation, partnerships and technology are crucial for a successful green recovery

By Louisa Watson, Director of Marketing, Wyboston Lakes Resort

Sustainability is rising once again on business agendas after being understandably relegated by some organisations for the past year by the sheer need to survive. Yet, at its very core, sustainability is actually about survival. The two are entwined. A green post-pandemic recovery is vital for all businesses in the events and hospitality sector as they navigate the road ahead.

Current challenges faced by the industry

At Venues and Events International, we have been greatly encouraged by the confidence in our clients for the return of in-person meetings and events. Our sales pipeline increased by 30% between April and May - an incredible achievement in just one month, and 80% of this is contracted! We typically see 55% of our annual budgeted revenue covered by the pipeline in May, but the coverage was 88% this year.

Choosing what to read at university is a rather daunting process. One tries to strike the balance of choosing something you will enjoy while offering great career prospects. This was something I felt I had smashed when excitedly confirming my place to read events management and marketing at the University of Brighton back in 2016. Not only would the knowledge and skills gained be extremely transferable, but career opportunities would be abundant because people are always attending events, right?
