Torquay’s Riviera International Conference Centre (RICC) has won its bid to host an inaugural darts tournament, Torquay Darts Open, 24 -25 November 2012.
Its organiser, Wizard Sports Events, organise and promote darts events around the world. Currently it runs 10 events of this nature, which are held annually across the UK at various venues. Eastbourne, their longest established event, has played host to its competition for 27 years and now attracts 800 players annually.
Wizard Sports Events’ David Griffin recently visited the RICC to meet with Mayor Gordon Oliver and Conference Torquay Manager Nicky Harding. He said: “We are delighted to have secured this tournament to Torquay in November and with the enthusiasm and sponsorship shown by both The Torbay Development Agency and the RICC, I am positive that the weekend will be a great success.”
Oliver added: “We are committed to our strategy of making Torbay an events capital, attracting events that have a positive direct economic impact on local businesses and we look forward to giving a warm Riviera welcome to players and their supporters in November.”
Wizard Sports are keen to encourage families to their events and as such provide a programme that caters for all age groups including a selection of darts events for youths. Darts matches will run all day, starting at 11.30am on Saturday and Sunday, culminating in the grand final of the Torquay Open, and the Open Pairs, on Sunday evening for which individuals will play for prize money.
