The World Travel and Tourism Council
(WTTC) has paid tribute to Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge, who passed
away on 5 July 2012. Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge, who was 78, spent
his entire career devoted to the travel and tourism industry.
Previously
Colin Marshall, he was a Founding Member of the WTTC as well as being
the Chairman of the tourist board VisitBritain from 2005-6.
He
began his career in 1951 with the Orient Steam Navigation Company,
before spending 23 years in vehicle and rental leasing, initially with
Hertz and subsequently with Avis. He was appointed CEO of British
Airways in 1983 and over the next 21 years played a fundamental role in
the privatisation of the airline. Marshall was appointed Chairman of
British Airways in 1993, a position he held until he retired in 2004.
From
1996-8, Marshall was President of the Confederation of British Industry
and chaired the CBI International Advisory Board. He also held senior
non-executive positions at Invensys, Inchcape, HSBC Holdings, Pirelli UK
and Nomura International, among others.
Fellow WTTC Founding
Member, James D Robinson III, then Chairman and CEO of American Express,
said of Lord Marshall: “Colin was instrumental in the initial formation
of WTTC and played a key role throughout his association. He was a
unique voice and dedicated believer in the power of the industry’s
message of economic development and job creation around the world.”
There will be a memorial service later in the year.
