A new attraction, Up at The O2, is set to open on 21 June 2012 and will offer corporate guests an opportunity to get up on the roof as part of their events.
The 90-minute experience will take visitors in groups of 30 on a guided expedition across the roof of The O2 via a tensile fabric walkway suspended 53m above ground level. An observation platform at the summit will enable climbers to take in 360˚ views of the capital.
Transport for London (TfL) remains tight lipped, meanwhile, on the likelihood of The Emirates Airline cable car being ready in time for the Olympics in July.
The £50.5m scheme, designed to connect the Greenwich Peninsula and the O2 to the Royal Victoria Docks and Excel London.
The cable car is designed to be both a tourist attraction and a new commuter route but, although most of the construction has been completed, safety tests remain to be carried out.
TfL predicts 2,500 people per hour will be able to make the 1.1km, five-minute journey across the river in one of 34 gondola cabins when the system does open later in the summer.
Emirates have sponsored the new crossing in a deal worth £36m over 10 years.
London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson, said: “This innovative airborne travel link will be a vital component in the ongoing renaissance of a vibrant easterly quarter of the capital, providing a much-needed river crossing.”
Meanwhile The O2 Arena will be configured to seat 16,000 spectators and will host artistic gymnastics, trampoline and basketball during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The O2 is also to host Jamaica House 2012 during the London 2012 Games. The House will present a lighter side of Jamaica but will also seek to provide, within the space, opportunities for business interface and media interactions.
The O2, which claims to be the world’s most popular venue, still reports a number of event spaces available for hire during the summer, including the 3,000 capacity nightclub Proud2 and the 2,350 capacity corporate space, IndigO2.
