Windermere Conference Centre Plans for a £4m conference centre near Lake Windermere have been granted approval.

The Lake District National Park Authority’s development control committee passed the English Lakes hotel group application on 9 May 2012. The vote was revealed as 12 to 1 in favour.

The 600-delegate convention and exhibition centre, when built, will be the largest of its kind in the Lake District area and is set to be built next to the A591, opposite the Low Wood Hotel, which is also owned by English Lakes.

The venue is expected to create 35 local jobs and will host such events as meetings, conventions, exhibitions, dinners, weddings and product launches.

The North-West Evening Mail reported committee member Michael McKinley voted in favour of the application, “but raised concerns over having a 300-space car park on the lakeshore, potential light pollution and the building’s design”.

In November 2009, CN reported the new conference centre announcement. The company already had permission to build the conference centre but needed planning permission for the new, modern design.

An innovative heating system will use ground source heat pumps located in the lake to create thermal energy for heating the rooms in the new building. The heat pumps will be run on electricity generated from solar panels located on the roof structure.

Other measures include lights fitted with daylight and movement sensors to minimise energy consumption and light pollution.

There are currently nine meeting rooms at the hotel, the largest accommodating 340 guests in a theatre-style layout.
