Sodexo helps find alternatives after HMS Belfast walkway collapse

HMS Belfast’s caterer Sodexo Prestige says it will help organisers find a suitable alternative venue for any events booked on the warship following the news its access route collapsed yesterday (29 November).

Around lunchtime, the London visitor attraction and event space’s pedestrian walkway from the embankment onto the warship collapsed into the River Thames, injuring two people.

Sodexo Prestige had an evening reception booked last night on the ship and had to make other arrangements. “Last night we managed to move the reception which was to take place on the boat to so that it could go ahead as planned,” a Prestige London spokesperson told CN.

“We will be in contact with clients that have events booked on HMS Belfast to try and find a suitable alternative venue,” they added.

The London Fire Brigade, who were planning a training exercise on the ship, instead helped 170 stranded visitors and staff to the shore via speed boats.

HMS Belfast director Phil Reed told the BBC that one of the three sections of the walkway had "sheared" away from the rest of it: “The two contractors on the brow got the warning as things began to rattle and they ran off and sustained only minor injuries."

The Health and Safety Executive will now investigate what had caused the walkway to collapse. Reed told the BBC he feared the attraction would miss out on thousands of pounds of revenue while it remained closed.
