Blackpool tourism chiefs are claiming the Labour Party’s North West 2011 Regional Conference in the town, 4-6 November, brought a £400,000 dividend for the town’s businesses.
The conference was held at Blackpool’s Imperial Hotel and newly-restored Winter Gardens and brought 1,000 delegates to the resort during the weekend.
Party leader Ed Miliband used the platform to set out his five-point plan to create jobs and support small businesses across the North West.
Miliband said he was delighted Labour’s regional conference took place in Blackpool.
“We have had many happy conferences in Blackpool in the past and it’s good to be back with both old friends and a new generation of members,” the Labour leader said.
Blackpool has undergone a major £250m regeneration, including the reopening of Blackpool Tower and the restoration of the historic Winter Gardens complex.
Mandy Tythe-McCallum, Business Tourism Manager for visitBlackpool, said: “The conference was a great success and we were delighted to welcome the Labour Party back to Blackpool at such an exciting time. Blackpool has come a long way in the last few years and the return of the Labour Party shows the confidence organisers have in the resort’s ability to deliver for major events.
“Business tourism is an important part of Blackpool’s economy and is worth in excess of £40m per year to the resort.”
Blackpool’s Barcelo Imperial Hotel, on the North Promenade, has a 144-year history and has played host to a number of prominent political figures over the years, including The Queen Mother, Tony Blair, John Major, Bill Clinton and Winston Churchill.
