Court action may be taken to remove a man-made beach built at a conference centre in Warwickshire.
The beach is part of Heart Park at Fillongley, which is used for team building activities as well as a visitor attraction. Owner, Stephen Hammon, was given permission to add a lake to the site when he purchased it in 2002.
Since then, he converted an old farmhouse into a conference venue, added the beach and used woodland areas for team building activities without applying for planning permission. The decisions have raised the ire of North Warwickshire Borough Council, who is threatening to take legal action.
“Up to 60 jobs rely on the venue’s development, but if the council gets its way then I will be forced to lay off the majority of these people,” Hammon said.
Chairman of the council’s planning board, Mark Simpson says it has a duty to protect the local greenbelt.
“We do recognise that this site can provide a good day out. However, we also have a duty to conserve the countryside, protect the greenbelt, reduce traffic hazards and noise nuisance,” he said. “If they continue in this way, we will have to consider court action in the future.”
