Booking pubs as venues for meetings is a growing trend among cost-conscious planners, according to travel and management services group Expotel.
Expotel’s Head of Partner Services, Mark Bevan, says: “Almost every week Expotel is now booking smart pub-type venues for meetings because they are seen as a viable ‘no-frills’ option. As notions of prestige decline in favour of consideration of price, the relatively pub basic offering is proving to be a workable alternative to a dedicated meetings environment for a growing number of clients.
“The value-filled tariffs for function suites-cum-meeting rooms as well as generous catering arrangements, with breakouts held in bar booths, are a very serviceable option for some less formal event types.”
However, Bevan says that hotels should be aware of the threat posed by pubs, “Not only for the possible room hire savings represented but also because of the perceptions of better value meals and refreshments as well as common pub offerings such as free Wi-Fi”.
