MD of the Brighton Centre, Steve Piper, is to move along the south coast in October to become the new head of venues at Bournemouth International Centre and Pavilion.
Piper will take a new, enhanced role as head of venues as part of the Executive Management Team at BH Live, the non-profit company that manages the BIC and six other Bournemouth venues. Three new divisions are to be created at BH Live, CEO Peter Gunn tells CN: a Leisure Division; a Finance and Corporate Services Division and the Events Division headed by Piper.
The appointment follows the announcement last week that Clive Tyers will step down after 16 years at the BIC.
Piper will assume responsibility for the overall performance of the venues, which will include developing cultural events, conferencing, operations, sales and marketing.
A statement from BH Live says Piper “will be actively involved in developing town partnerships and representing BH Live on national industry bodies and forums. Steve has extensive experience of the conference, exhibition and entertainment sectors as well as valuable commercial, programming and operational experience of major venues”.
Prior to his current MD role at the Brighton Centre, which he held for 12 years, Piper spent 11 years at the Brighton Dome Theatre and Arts Complex, five of which as General Manager.
Gunn adds: “Steve’s unique mix of conference, exhibition, entertainment and theatre experience will be a real asset to BH Live and to Bournemouth as a whole and we are really looking forward to welcoming him into the team. We are very fortunate to have attracted someone of Steve’s calibre and feel that his appointment reflects the ambitions of BH Live as a new leisure and cultural trust for Bournemouth”
Piper says he is “excited” about taking on this new challenge. “I am pleased to be joining the team in the early stages of the new organisation. I am particularly looking forward to working at such prestigious venues as the BIC and Pavilion and with a team of staff that I know to be of high quality and extremely committed.”
