VisitBritain has spoken out following Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech this morning in London on the challenges and opportunities that tourism presents.
“We are delighted the Prime Minister has declared so clearly that tourism is fundamental to the rebuilding and rebalancing of our economy,” says VisitBritain’s CEO Sandie Dawe. “And we share his determination to use the coming decade to boost Britain’s international competitiveness in tourism and to take our industry to a whole new level.
“We are already focusing on delivering on these ambitions to build the value of inbound tourism. Our activity contributes £1.1bn to the economy and delivers £150m directly to the Treasury each year in tax take,” she adds.
The tourism bureau says it has plans in place to leverage the opportunity of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. “The Games provide us with the opportunity to showcase Britain around the world,” says Dawe “raising awareness across the growth tourism markets of Asia and reinvigorating our appeal in core markets such as the USA where we have lost ground”.
“And we are coordinating the private-public sector Welcome to Britain project to ensure foreign visitors get a world-class welcome in 2012 and beyond,” adds Dawe.
Dawe says VisitBritain understands the challenge that Britain and British business face in operating in such a globally competitive market. “As a result we deliver £250m in revenue to the tourism industry through our B2B work such as trade missions overseas, exhibitions, agency training programmes, seminars and workshops,” she adds.
