Plans for a 234-bedroom Premier Inn in Lambeth, which were contested by competitor hotel owners, have been approved by a High Court judge.
Galliard Hotels and Marlbray, which own hotels located near the proposed new build at the former General Lying-In Hospital, claimed the London Borough of Lambeth incorrectly approved the proposal. They said Premier Inn chain owners, the Whitbread Group, provided “substandard” facilities for dealing with coach and taxi traffic, which was a necessary condition of the permission granted by the Council in June 2009.
"It does not help the claimant’s case to characterise the strategy as ’substandard’,” says Mr Justice Nicol. “Whether to approve it or not was a matter for Lambeth’s planning judgment."
The approval is good news for the hotel chain, who recently announced its latest site acquisition, a new 267-room budget hotel at Stratford, located adjacent to the Olympic Stadium.
Investing
some £25m and creating approximately 90 jobs in the process, the new build will
be the closest hotel to the new Stratford International station, which opened in
December 2009. This will enable staying guests’ access to the new high-speed
rail service into central London and the Eurostar.
“Securing this
first-class location adjacent to the Olympic Stadium is a great result for us,”
says chief executive of Whitbread, Alan Parker. “With our expansion over the
next two years Premier Inn will have an unrivalled presence across London with more bedrooms
in more locations than any other hotel operator.”
