The first phase of construction for the Brockholes floating visitor centre and event space has been completed.
Owned and managed by The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside, Brockholes is positioned on a 106 hectare reclaimed wetland habitat near Preston and is due to open in Spring 2011. The trust hopes to attract over 250,000 people annually from across the UK.
Adam Khan Architects, claims the floating design is the first of its kind in the UK.
“One of the key attractions of this woodland and wetlands site is the nature conservation experience is that people can readily observe biodiversity in action,” says the regional director of The Forestry Commision, Keith Jones. “With the completion of the pontoon we can already see how visitors will be attracted to this site will enjoy first-hand interaction with the environment around them, bringing the public closer to nature, and providing a socio-economic uplift to the locality.”
The main centre will have a capacity for between 50 to 150 delegates and includes a break-out room. The reserve also can be used for lunchtime activities and teambuilding sessions.
The project is funded by an £8.6m investment from the Northwest Regional Development Agency under the Forestry Commission-led regeneration programme ‘Newlands’. The Lancashire Environmental Fund awarded £446,000 for the development of the education facilities, hides and infrastructure on the site.
