NewcastleGateshead survey shows £105m worth of investment

A survey conducted by the NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau claims £105m has been pumped into venues and hotels in and around the twin cities.
The survey of the bureau’s 90 members gauged the investment in the region’s conference portfolio, from January 2009 through to January 2011. It revealed that 951 hotel rooms had been completely refurbished and 535 new bedrooms built during this time.
Other improvements included restaurant renovation, new gymnasia and upgraded audio visual equipment.
“This survey shows that even during tougher economic times it is important to invest in product to always stay ahead of the game,” says Jessica Roberts, head of business tourism at the bureau. “A large number of our venues and hotels are doing just that, improving the conference experience for business visitors.”
Northumbria University’s redevelopment includes a new-build with 500 en-suite bedrooms, to be completed at the end of the year. Four-star Close House Hotel has built 12 new bedrooms and is completing the building of a new championship golf course and clubhouse, due to open early next year. A new golf academy opens in August 2010.
County Hotel by Thistle has seen extensive refurbishments to rooms and corridors.
