Excel London’s MD David Pegler says Transport for London’s (TfL) proposals for the UK’s first urban cable car “will offer a much needed cross river transport option to the venue”.
The £25m development proposals, which are currently under public consultation in collaboration with the London Development Agency (LDA), include a privately-funded, fully-accessible cable car for pedestrians and cyclists, which would cut travel times between Excel London and the 02. It would be open ahead of the 2012 Games.
Pegler says: “This is fantastic news for Excel London. We are already easily accessible but the cable car would offer a much needed cross river option and open up the after hours leisure and entertainment destination of the popular O2 arena with its many bars, restaurants, concerts and cinemas.
“The cable car will offer our visitors a unique experience and an alternative travel route to Excel London from the Jubilee line, Greenwich and the South East,” he adds.
The cable car could provide a crossing every 30 seconds carrying up to 2,500 passengers an hour in each direction, equivalent to the capacity of 50 buses.
The aim is to fund the construction of the scheme entirely from private finance, and discussions are ongoing with a number of private sector organisations.
