The London Borough of Wandsworth Council has finally approved a proposal by developer Oak Trading, part of Redwood Property Group, for an eight-storey hotel near Clapham Junction station after its initial proposal of a 132-bedroom, 16-storey building was turned down.

The hotel, which will include 70 bedrooms, a restaurant and conference and meeting facilities, was initially designed to demolish a dated office block, Woburn House, which is currently the Clapham Junction Jobcentre but now the building will be redeveloped using the original facade.

Director of Oak, Tim Glass, says: “The project will replace an indifferent and depressing 70s office block with an iconic new building that will make a major economic and architectural contribution to the regeneration of Clapham Junction.

“We want to see this project up and running to provide much needed hotel facilities in this perfect green travel location before the 2012 Olympics,” he adds.

A separate application for a three-storey block of flats behind the hotel development was also approved.

“This proposal is much more in keeping with its surrounding and will make a valuable addition to the town centre,” says planning application chairman at Wandsworth council, Cllr Nick Cuff.

The former application was met by opposition from local residents (85 objections), local societies, English Heritage, the Mayor of London and MP for Battersea, Martin Linton.
