Salary: £65,000 - £75,000 (pro-rata)

An exciting opportunity has arisen within London Transport Museum for an Assistant Director with a commercial background across retail, online and also new business. A commercial background is ideal, with an active interest in applying this experience in the charity sector highly beneficial.

Job scope:

Devising and delivering strategies for the realisation of secondary income streams from new businesses and development opportunities through the optimal commercialisation of the LTM asset base.

Drive and grow the commercial and business performance of all LTM Trading (retail, online, wholesale). Accountable for net contribution and delivery to business plan targets across LTM Trading.

Do this by improving the contribution of existing retail and on-line business and establish new business lines - such as 3rd party joint ventures and ''experiences'' business.

Direct report to Museum Director, to Trading Company board and membership of senior management team

Key accountabilities:

  • Development and delivery of plans to improve income from existing retail and online activity, by applying business and market knowledge and leveraging opportunities identified.
  • Delivery of sustained, year-on-year income growth from new business opportunities by active management, including close monitoring
  • Driving improved margin performance in current retail (shop and online) activities.
  • Identifying and establishing new commercial ventures using LTM IPR and TfL capital investment. These need to generate positive contribution quickly.
  • Development of active strategies for the realisation of new secondary income streams in accordance with LTM corporate objectives
  • Strengthening LTM Trading business model and improving delivery of new commercial activities. Sources, orders, supplies and delivers competitively priced goods and services in line with demand plans;
  • Identifies and evaluates bids and tenders from potential suppliers for goods, services, supplies and works, negotiating contracts to gain the most favourable terms, pricing and benefit (value for money) for LTM.
  • Identification and mitigation of the risks associated with new business opportunities through an appropriate risk management framework.
  • Build and maintain effective communication links with other members of the LTM senior management team, trading company board members and relevant external bodies as appropriate, to ensure that the implementation meets the needs of the business.
  • Effective management of projects aligned to best practice across a 3 year horizon.
  • Communicate and influence stakeholders to gain commitment to the Commercial/Trading Strategy
  • Manage all commercial risk associated with third-party service/product supply including the adoption of appropriate contract terms and effective commercial contract management in order to minimise the risk (likelihood and impact) of financial and service losses to TfL.

Financial Impact:

  1. Current trading business around £2.6m turn over – need to double this over 3 years.
  2. Net contribution needs to increase from c. £500k to £1m over same period

  • Managing and driving improvements in P&L with diverse activities.
  • Retail trading experience/ New commercial venture/partnership experience
  • Degree level qualification preferably in a business development related discipline, ideally supplemented by a business management qualification(s). –Desirable
  • Extensive knowledge of relevant commercial markets and best in class practices in relation to the formulation of commercial agreements, and the ability to adapt this knowledge to suit both a complex transport environment and the constraints of the public sector
  • Significant line management experience –Desirable
  • Tact and diplomacy to deal with internal LTM dynamics (esp. relationship with Charity) and wider TfL relationships.
  • Commercial and financial knowledge within a large organisation including understanding of financial documents such as Profit & Loss reports, Balance sheets and basic business ratios including margin percentages and liquidity ratio’s.
  • Knowledge of financial methodologies including cost accounting, activity based costing and break-even analysis.

    Has good facilitation, meeting management, listening, coaching, project management and presentational skills
  • Negotiation: Ability to negotiate complex and high value agreements with at all levels, with colleagues, third party, customers, partners and suppliers.

  • Experience of managing projects and programmes to tight deadlines and budgetary constraints.

Data Manager - Publishing Sector - Permanent - Central London

Salary: £25,000 - £30,000 per annum

The Client:

A growing B2B publisher based in Wimbledon, is looking to appoint a Data Manager to join their team and take on responsibility for the companies data across a range of print and digital products.

The successful candidate will have at least 3 years database experience within a circulations or subscriptions role, with a results-focused approach and excellent team-working skills. The role will suit a candidate with strong attention to detail, and who is comfortable with numbers, in order to be able to work with reader mailing lists and the analytics surrounding marketing campaigns.

The Data Manager will work closely with other Management to understand business requirements of the database. You'll be responsible for implementing processes that will deliver data in the right quantities, ensuring data build and refresh delivers accurate, targeted, coded data to support marketing plans. In addition to developing the processes and data strategy, you'll manage a team of 2 Data Executives. You will be responsible for keeping all the companies data clean and in good order and will lead on projects to maintain it in this order, so excellent planning, management and organisation skills are a must.

The Role:

  • Coordinate the distribution process for three B2B monthly magazines, three quarterly B2B magazines, six annual directories/listings guides, one bi-monthly consumer magazine

  • Compile mailing lists for all of the above

  • Manage and keep up to date all of the data for the above

  • Prepare annual ABC circulation audits

  • Data profiling, manipulation and audience segmentation for internal and external clients

  • Oversee the development, maintenance and research strategy for the directories

  • Manage, maintain and develop the listings across three listings websites

  • Manage, maintain and develop sales CRM system

  • Liaise with Circulation Manager to ensure success of data driven marketing strategies.

  • Liaise with Portfolio Directors to maximise opportunity from data.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Experience of the B2B publishing sector would be an advantage.

  • Proven success in database management, including data profiling, manipulation and audience segmentation, and experience in creating and using spreadsheets and reporting tools is essential

  • Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills, with a keen eye for detail and superior analytical skills

  • Knowledge of email marketing software tools would be an advantage, with experience of direct marketing tactics in all channels and email, online and print promotions

  • Understanding of, and keen interest in, harnessing web/email marketing opportunities to generate audience data

  • A self-starter, with initiative to make decisions and overcome problems

  • A team-player, keen to contribute, share learning and learn from others

  • Strong grasp of all Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to learn new tools quickly and accurately

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably with marketing/business related qualifications
