Extending your audience through social media

The next QEIICC Masterclass will be on the 3 February and is focused on extending your audience through social media. Speaker Kursha Woodgate, MD of Mexia Communications shares some of the content with us:

When I first started talking to people in the meetings industry about Twitter and how this was a step change in the way we communicate back in early 2009, there were more than a few raised eyebrows.

I presented at the ICCA UK and Ireland Chapter’s Summer Debate in Aberdeen and talked about this shift, which sparked interest and curiosity but it was still early days for many businesses. Just two years later and you can barely watch a TV show, whether its’s Big Brother or the BBC News, without reference to a #hashtag or @Twitter profile; social media communication has most definitely gone mainstream.

In the events sector, the buzz has been phenomenal, with many venues, destinations, service providers and conference organisers joining the social media revolution. Yet there remains a degree of uncertainty about how best to leverage social networking channels for business purposes and, in particular in the events sector, for building an engaged community before, during and after the event. Having worked with Twitter and a number of social networks for a number of years, we have developed great techniques for message strategy, content that really works and some nuts and bolts of how, when and what needs to be posted, tweeted or shared.

The MasterClass at The QEII Conference Centre aims to give event organisers some practical tips on how to build a social media community, particularly on Twitter, looking at tools for managing multiple accounts, tips for avoiding blunders, monitoring what is being said and much more. The hashtag in particular has quickly become part of everyday language already, used casually on radio and TV as a trigger for people to follow the conversation.

We will explore hashtags and how these can be leveraged by event organisers to extend their audience beyond the physical event and also to engage delgates during the live event. With two insightful case study examples of how Twitter has been used both at a Hybrid event to engage a remote international audience and at a recent medical congress in the UK, we are looking forward to a practical session where we can help people to take Twitter to the next level.
