Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference centre cuts six posts
Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) is to cut six staff posts and freeze staff pay, as its council owner swings the budget axe for the next financial year.
AECC MD Brian Horsburgh tells conference-news: “Due to the financial cutbacks in the public sector, AECC will receive reduced funding from its owners, Aberdeen City Council, in the financial year 2010-2011. After a tough year due to effects of the recession, we have had to take a number of cost-saving measures to square our budget. This regrettably includes the loss of six permanent posts through natural wastage and voluntary redundancy.
“However, I am pleased to say that business in the second half of the coming financial year looks more promising, with enquiry levels up significantly.”
Horsburgh has also said there will be a pay freeze for the next financial year.
The local Press & Journal newspaper estimates the AECC brings £75million a year into the regional economy.
The P&J says the UK general election has had a negative impact on potential venue revenues with promoters unable to book concert acts early in the summer. Acts including Lady GaGa and Rihanna will not be able to perform as the local authority-owned venue has to be kept free for potential election counts.
In 2008 the council provided £2million in emergency funding and the P&J claims says an extra £887,000 on top of AECC’s annual subsidy, which amounted to £3.25million over five years, was requested.
The new job cuts follow 11 posts lost from the AECC last year.
