My loyal subjects,
As we sit here in the Barbican Conservatory Throne Room we would like to take a moment to reflect back on 2008 before looking to the future.
2008 certainly stared with a bang (particularly those watching fireworks displays); Confex was a roaring success, the industry was upbeat and venues and organisers were reporting record-breaking figures. The CSR flame was fanned and we looked out on what we had created and saw that it was good.
Since then markets have slowed and changed dramatically, with many predicting a poor outlook for the future. But we have been strong, we have rallied and are fighting back against the twin demons recession and downturn. Individually, in twos, threes, as companies and associations, we are forging a path for the future.
What’s more, we are ending the year on a high, despite the recent musings of a certain industry lecturer. Corporate hospitality is still taking place, not just here in our beloved capital but also in the far reaching provinces such as Liverpool. Christmas parties are going ahead; meetings and training are still taking place. In fact we are reminded of a certain story taught to us as a child, and on reflection feel that little has changed other the last 2000 years – on certain days, there is still no room at the inn!
For us to avoid a second annus horribilis, 2009 must be a year of partnerships, planning and teamwork. Differences must be laid to rest as we bring the traditions of family, generosity and forgiveness into the workplace, creating an industry of prosperity and growth. And it is in this spirit of forgiveness that we lift the charges of high treason and extend an offer of friendship to our lecturer colleague at Westminster University
With our production, stage management and creative skills, ours is potentially the most visible industry in the world. By demonstrating our strength and positive attitude we can be a beacon of light to others, leading the way to financially secure ground and prosperity.
And it is with these positive thoughts that I leave you to join the rest of our family for lunch in Searcy’s Waterside Royal Cafe.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
