Jane Longhurst, chief executive of the Meetings Industry Association (mia), has said the association believes the Prime Minister had no option but to call a General Election, in the interests of unity.
The association issued a brief statement, 18 April, welcoming Theresa May’s unscheduled announcement to call a General Election on 8 June.
“The Meetings Industry Association has been calling for unity since the results of the EU Referendum were announced last June,” the statement said. “For future economic prosperity and to ensure our sector continues to thrive and the UK remains the destination of choice for international business events, it is essential that the Government is united and stable to negotiate the best deal for the UK as we exit the European Union.
“This isn’t a political game. We believe Prime Minister Theresa May had no option but to make today’s unscheduled announcement that there will be a General Election on Thursday, 8 June.”
