Lord Byron’s Cambridgeshire retreat attracts corporate events and brides

Wedding venue entrepreneur David Leathem has rescued a former country hotel and realised a major investment in order to host corporate events and weddings in the former retreat of Lord Byron.

Swynford Manor a Cambridgeshire mansion, near Newmarket, was rescued from administration in 2015 and the owners say bookings since its soft launch this summer have exceeded targets by 50%.

Leathem, the MD of Swynford Manor, and his investment partners through Downing Investment funds, told CN they had put together “a substantial funding package”.

The majority of Swynford Manor’s corporate bookings are from international companies based in the nearby Cambridge Science Park, with a majority of enquiries for automotive product launches.

Set in seven acres, the manor house includes 13 luxury en-suite bedrooms, and several event rooms, the largest with capacity for 150 seated guests.

Wedding parties can have exclusive use over the entire venue for 24–48 hour periods, with the on-site chef and kitchen team catering to a wide variety of palates. In October 2016, Swynford Manor hosted its first wedding fair.
