National cinema chain Vue has launched a legal challenge against the proposed £44m York Community Stadium development. The legal challenge comes seven months after a review that resulted in York City Council putting a further £7m into the initial £37m project,
Vue has received permission for a judicial review of a stadium plan would see a 13-screen cinema developed at the site and clearly pose competition to Vue’s own 12-screen cinema at Clifton Moor.
The review could add a minimum of six months to the project and will be seen as a setback for the sports clubs (rugby league club York City Knights and York City Football Club) that would move into the new stadium. It will also mean delay in extra conference space coming on to the York market.
Laura Freer, conference marketing manager at city bureau Make It York, told CN: “Once it gets the full green light, it is planned that York Community Stadium will offer three rooms for conferences and meetings and it will be excellent news to have another product offer for meetings and events organisers. Details though, are still being worked up and we hope to have more information on this in the New Year.”
Freer says the plans for the three rooms for conferences are for capacities of 200, 100 and 100 in banqueting style, with the primary function of the rooms being matchday hospitality for local football/rugby clubs.
