CN at ibtm world: Martin’s Memoirs: time is precious

Hello, and welcome to Martin’s Memoirs. I will be blogging at the end of each day from ibtm world this week, sharing my experiences, thoughts and opinions. I will also be doing some social media-ing, so keep a tabs on CN‘s Twitter feed. The event runs from Tuesday to Thursday in Barcelona.

Now, to business…

Let’s be clear: I’m still new to this industry. We understand that? Good. So with that in mind please don’t laugh at the fact that I don’t know what the IBTM in ibtm world stands for. Or why it’s all lower case, for that matter.

When I was asked to go along this year I said yes without thinking to ask what it was all about. Here we are the day before and I’ve been frantically Googling in a desperate attempt to make sense of it all.

I have it on good authority that ibtm is an abbreviation for Incentives, Business, Travel and Meetings, and that, mercifully, clears things up a bit.

But what of the show itself?

As far as I can tell it looks like a large gathering in which bureaus, agencies, destinations, and venues are all lined up with brochures, business cards and beaming white teeth. I, as far as I can make out, must then walk around stroking my chin sagely while deciding who I have time to go and see.

That all sounds fine, but then I stumbled across the exhibitor list. There are, apparently, over 15,000 people, 3,000 stands, 150 countries, and 100 events taking place across three days. I’m no mathematician, but I think that means if I attempt to get round to all 3,000 stands in the 22 show hours I have available, I will only have 44 seconds at each.

It takes me 44 seconds to get my notebook out.

So we have a problem, then. There’s no way I can get to see everyone at ibtm this week, and a number of you have already been in touch, wooing me with the promise of scones and Chablis.

I will do my best to see as many of you as I can, but please understand if I seem in a rush, I probably am. And, just because we haven’t met before, that doesn’t mean you can’t get in touch via email or over the phone.

I’m looking forward to meeting lots of new people and putting some faces to the names of the recurring characters that so pepper my inbox this week, even if it’s only for 44 seconds.
