Mia gets behind #LondonIsOpen campaign but urges ‘nationwide’ outlook

The Meetings Industry Association (mia) is throwing its weight behind the Mayor of London’s new global #LondonIsOpen campaign but is also urging industry leaders to look beyond just the capital.

Jane Longhurst, chief executive of the mia (pictured), said: “I think Sadiq Khan’s initiative to show our international partners that London is still open and retains its entrepreneurial and creative spirit is admirable. It is a great initiative and one the whole country should get behind.

“London could benefit from discussing best practice with the talented independent venues in the regions who constantly strive to meet the challenges of gaining inbound tourism for both business and leisure and have been creatively marketing themselves to attract both domestic and international trade for much longer.”

The mia chief executive added: “Following Brexit, the mia has been actively encouraging the meetings, conferences and hospitality industry to embrace the referendum result, not sit back and rest on its laurels.

“Instead we should be being optimistic for the UK’s future. We have a unique opportunity to take advantage of international trade and business and should be looking creatively at developing plans to diversify to attract trade from not just within Europe but with the world.”

The mia is one of the fastest growing associations in the conference, meetings and events sector and has 530 accredited members.

Voting has also opened for the miaList ‘Team of the Year’ accolade.

Seven venues from across the UK have been short-listed for the team title that celebrates outstanding representatives from the meetings, hospitality and events industry who go above and beyond the call of duty.

Vying for votes are Southampton Solent University’s Conference and Events Team; Destination Bristol’s Conference Team; Mallory Court’s Reservation and Events Team; Holiday Inn Bloomsbury’s Meetings and Events Team; Westminster College Cambridge’s Domestic Team; Whittlebury Hall’s Conference and Events Team and The Grand Brighton’s Conference and Banqueting Operations Team.

The miaList awards also welcomed nominations for individuals in a range of categories, including: Conference and Events, Food and Beverage (Production), Front of House, Back of House, Sales, Marketing and Rising Star.

Jane Longhurst, chief executive of the mia, said: “Once again we were extremely pleased with the number and particularly the quality of the nominations received again this year as it is testament to the number of talented and inspiring individuals we have working in our industry.”
