MPs join the mia’s EU debate at The HAC

MPs James Heappey and Chris Heaton-Harris, both part of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the UK Events Industry, will be joining the mia’s EU debate tonight (23 May) at The Honourable Artillery Company in London.

Chaired by Conference News editor Paul Colston, the debate will also feature City Pubs and Britain Stronger in Europe campaigner Clive Watson, Vote Leave’s Luke Springthorpe, Redcomb Pubs’ David Franks, as well as conference and event presenter Jeremy Jacobs and industry trainer and consultant Richard John.

As the industry employs high numbers of European staff on its payroll, the debate is set to discuss the impact on employment, recruitment and contracts should the UK opt for the exit vote in the referendum. Will it lead to a particular ‘severe skills shortage’ in the sector as some are predicting?

Similarly, the impact on international supplier contracts will be examined as the UK would be operating under different principles of EU contract law. Will Britain need to put different trading agreements in place with every country it imports/exports goods from?

Other hot topics likely to be looked at include the potential impact on tourism and the economy as a whole.

Jane Longhurst, chief executive of the mia, said: “We are aware that many of our members remain unsure of the direct impact their cross on the ballot paper could have on our sector so we are delighted to have secured such a high calibre panel to talk about this important issue. Interest has been extremely high as it seems the industry is keen to make an informed choice when they head to the polling stations on 23 June.”

Members of the audience will also get the chance to put their own questions to the panel in a dedicated Q&A.
