Holiday Inn Newport sees occupancy treble

South Wales has enjoyed a prolonged summer for hospitality and events due to some of the Rugby World Cup 2015 being held in Cardiff.

With plenty of global visitors attending matches, South East Wales has tried to establish itself as an industry-leading destination.

Record attendances at sporting events and fully booked accommodation gave the regional economy a strong boost and showed that, despite the economic downturn, big events can bring revenue to town.

Dermot Keegan, general manager of the Holiday Inn Newport, said: “Commercially it has helped enormously. We’ve seen occupancy rates on quiet nights nearly treble for this time of year, while on peak nights demand has ensured that we are able to increase rates whilst providing value for money.”

“Culturally it’s exposed our hotel to a much wider market. Our client mix is normally 90% UK and Ireland.”
