An undergraduate at the University of Greenwich has been appointed to the board of an industry association.
The Association of British Professional Conference Organisers has co-opted Noemi La Torre, an events management student, to its board. She will support the association with the formulation of a social media engagement strategy and provide put from a student’s perspective.
New university student members at ABPCO include Sarah Chapman (University of Derby), Jayne Hughes (University of Ulster), Charmaine Facey (University of Bedfordshire) and Jane Green-Peppit (Nottingham Trent University).
The student membership category includes free delegate places at all events. The events give exposure to current practices as well as networking opportunities with industry professionals.
Heather Lishman, ABPCO association director, said: “There has been a strong surge of university student members in recent months. As an association we are constantly bringing our members together to share experiences, best practice and to provide real opportunities so the student membership is perfect for those looking to get their foot in the door of the industry. Current student members are really benefiting from the exposure to industry professionals and we hope it’s a membership category that continues to grow because ABPCO recognises the importance of university students as the future of the industry. We are encouraging their involvement from the start of their careers to reinforce professionalism through education and peer engagement.”
Noemi La Torre said: “The opportunity to gather experience alongside my studies is one I am thankful for. ABPCO has not only given me the opportunity to experience the industry firsthand, but it has already made a big impact on my fledgling career and I am looking forward to working alongside them over the coming months.”
