York’s only five-star hotel has submitted plans for a £15m two-year redevelopment to the city council with work already begun replacing exterior signs at what was formerly known as the Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa. The plans follow the
sale of the property to Splendid Hospitality Group in 2014 and will see it
transformed into The Grand Hotel & Spa, York.
The change of name
heralds a new era for the hotel, which celebrates its fifth birthday
Owners Splendid Hospitality Group say the plans include a
doubling of the bedrooms. The group currently also owns Express by Holiday Inn
on Malton Road in York and will be opening the 101 bedroom Hotel Indigo in the
city this summer.
Group also purchased the Roman House and has filed plans to re-develop it as a
new wing to the existing Grand hotel to which it is connected.
A new dining space
will offer space for 140 guests.
The owners of The
Grand hope to start work on the new restaurant before the end of the year with
the development of Roman House following shortly after.
Stuart Bailey, CEO of
Splendid Hospitality Group, said:
“This is an exciting period for The
Grand and for York. The hotel is already acknowledged as being one of the
finest in the region but, following this major investment, it will be among the finest in the country, attracting more visitors in search of a luxurious
hotel stay from further afield.
“We look forward to working alongside the City
of York Council, English Heritage and other partner organisations to ensure
that disruption is kept to a minimum and the changes we are making enhance this
already stunning building.”
