Brides’ stress revisited at Derby Conference Centre

Hannah Ward appears to be the latest bride-to-be to be let down on a wedding booking at Derby Conference Centre.

According to the Burton Mail newspaper, the centre has pulled the plug on all 14 weddings booked after 1 November 2015 at the venue, in order to focus on corporate events.

The venue has made clear it has refunded all couples who paid their £500 deposits in full.

Hannah and her fiancé, Matthew Staples, were due to be married on 7 May next year.

Ward said she was “shocked because it happened out of the blue. Then I came to the realisation that we had booked everything for that day and that venue”.

The couple have now reportedly booked a different venue.

Derby Conference Centre MD Mike Ebbitt told the Burton Mail that management was altering the venue to accommodate corporate and office-space events. “Sadly it would not be possible to offer weddings after that November date.

“I’m happy to say we have now refunded all of the couples in full. We have also been in touch with all of the brides getting married before November to tell them their wedding will go ahead as planned.”

Derby Conference Centre hit the headlines last August when a bride-to-be claimed her wedding plans had been threatened by an overlap in conference breakdown and her guests’ arrival.
Lucy Blood, from Measham in Leicestershire, had booked a £10,000 wedding at Derby Conference Centre and weeks out from the big day, was told that a large corporate conference had been booked the day before her wedding, with marquees and portaloos left lining the grounds and her guests unable to check in until half an hour before the wedding started.
The bride-to-be said she was less than impressed with the response to her concerns from Ebbitt.
“He was saying I was just an emotional bride,” the Burton Mail reported at the time.
Ebbitt then told CN that an early check-in for guests had never been guaranteed and was subject to availability, something “clearly stated” in the contract.
He said he had “bent over backwards to try to offer solutions and had offered a full refund”.
The Derby Conference Centre hosted a spring Wedding Fayre on 22 February 2015 and the venue’s website claims its “Sunken Lounge and banqueting suites are the perfect setting for a fabulous wedding ceremony or reception”.
