Associations intervene to minimise CDM impact

After two years of working and engaging closely with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), the Event Supplier and Services Association (ESSA), the Association of Event Venues (AEV), and the Association of Event Organisers (AEO), report they are rolling out a number of initiatives to help members understand and operate in compliance with the new Construction, Design & Management (CDM) 2015 regulations.

Andrew Harrison (pictured), ESSA director, said that without the associations’ intervention, the implementations, which came in on 6 April, had the potential to look very different. Harrison said: “They would have realised many members’ earliest fears and it is timely for us to thank all the members from across the three associations, who, after working together on this project via the CDM task force, will have brought about a set of industry specific guidance.”

The industry specific guidance described by Harrison seeks to map and recognise current industry practice, using existing regulations and best practice to meet the new CDM regulations. In addition, the associations have committed to hold a number of free to attend CDM educational roadshows over the coming weeks spread geographically across the UK.

“We will be commissioning an event specific CDM app and web-based solution to enable companies to comply with the submission of relevant documentation, and to enable a step by step understanding of the new regulations including roles and responsibilities. All relevant information will also be made available via hardcopy, and digital, ‘how to comply’ documents, providing simple step-by-step guides to complying with CDM2015,” said Harrison.

“The three associations have always taken a very considered approach when confronted with anything that presents a challenge to the industry. Also worthy of note is the continued engagement and dialogue with HSE, as early insights will be shared in order to develop the guidance and supporting association materials. This will help to provide the comprehensive, up to date, free of charge suite of products to help members to minimise costs and drive efficiencies in their businesses,” Harrison added.
