Harrogate to host WI centenary celebration

Harrogate International Centre (HIC) has been chosen to host a four-day celebration to mark 100 years of the Women’s Institute (WI) in September.
Thousands of visitors are expected at HIC for the inaugural WI Centennial Fair in September.
Two hundred exhibitors are expected, along with a Live Kitchen Theatre and over 150 hands-on seminars and workshops. The event will take over four of HIC’s biggest event halls as well as The Royal Hall theatre.
The National Federation of Women’s Institutes have commissioned Upper Street Events to organise the event.
HIC director Simon Kent said: “This is a real honour for HIC and for Harrogate. This year is the 100th anniversary of the WI and they have not only chosen Harrogate to celebrate the milestone but also to launch this new concept which looks like becoming a great annual event.
“This isn’t a closed WI show, this is a huge four-day public show celebrating the very best in cookery, gardening, homeware, travel and crafts. We are gearing up for some 18,000 visitors over the four days.”
Diana Birch, Chair of WI Enterprises, said: “We’ve created an event in honour of our centenary year to celebrate all that’s great about the WI, reflect members’ interests and share them with the wider public.”
The WI Centennial Fair will run 3-6 September 2015.
