Gerald Ratner to deliver Day 1 keynote at Confex

Gerald Ratner (pictured) is to join the International Confex Educational Programme this February, to share his experience on the mistakes he made in his career and relate how he picked himself up after ’that’ gaffe to run a successful business.

Ratner’s fall from grace was one of the most spectacular ever. Having described some of the products sold in the stores as ‘total crap’, he was forced to sell the business.

Event Director, Liz Agostini, says: “The International Confex educational programme will be one of the most thought provoking and controversial to date, challenging individuals to learn not only from the events industry but from other sectors as well. Inviting Gerald to share his experiences will be a timely reminder for CEOs, MDs and other senior executives on the importance of an organisation’s brand and the values, ethics and morals that guide the way the business behaves.

“Competition in the events industry is fierce and, as business owners and operators, we need to ensure we protect and promote our businesses in the most effective manner. Gerald’s candour will most certainly be insightful and thought-provoking.”

Gerald Ratner joins International Confex courtesy of Speaker’s Corner, a leading international agency that supplies speakers, presenters and hosts for FTSE100 companies and a range of organisations. MD Nick Gold said he was delighted to be working alongside International Confex.

“Gerald’s refreshingly honest approach is very relevant in the current climate and his humble delivery will not only have you in fits of laughter but more importantly will provide you with insights to take away and apply to both your personal and professional life,” said Gold.

Gerald Ratner turned a family jewellery business into a public company with 2,500 stores and sales of over £1.2bn. By 1990, Ratner’s was the world’s largest jewellery retailer with profits in excess of £120m.

An autobiography – ‘Gerald Ratner: The Rise and Fall… and Rise Again’ – has been serialised in the Sunday Times.

International Confex is at Olympia London 18-19 February 2015. Register now.
