ExclusLiquidation fears as Mackenzie follows Harrison out of Contendam

CN understands that event management agency Contendam is set to go into voluntary liquidation, less than a year after a management buyout.

Caroline Mackenzie left the business on 30 September, having resigned six months previously.

Mackenzie confirmed to CN she has now joined the Zibrant agency in its new Scotland office, where she will be Director of Association Services.

Mackenzie follows MD Rob Harrison out of the door and it is believed other staff were let go in September with a small core seeing through October’s programme of events.

Harrison had led the MBO of Congrex UK, following its parent group’s financial difficulties. The name was then changed to Contendam and staff were retained at premises in Glasgow and Hammersmith, London. http://www.conference-news.co.uk/news/2013/10/23/Management-buyout-of-Congrex-UK-renames-as-Contendam/6399

Mackenzie tells CN: “Its terribly sad at what has transpired within Contendam over the last month. I have been in contact with both staff and clients a like to try and support them in whatever way possible to minimise the upset. It just seems so unnecessary and many colleagues who have contributed so much, have had to deal with the consequences of the actions taken by the Contendam owners.”

Christian Olsen had been nominated to lead the business following Harrison’s sudden departure as CEO last month. Olsen then claimed “an exciting new phase” was beginning. http://www.conference-news.co.uk/news/2014/09/23/Contendam-says-business-as-usual-as-Olsen-replaces-Harrison/7601 CN tried to reach Olsen for comment via his Infinicor business, which lists itself as an investor in Contendam, but no contacts were available on the Infinicor website.

In the past five months Contendam has delivered major events including: ESPRAS 2014, the European Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons Congress held at the EICC and RCSEd in Edinburgh; the Bicentenary Anniversary conference of the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital; the International Spinal Cord Society Annual Scientific Meeting in Maastricht for 1000 and registration services for 2,700 delegates as the International Society for Obstetrics and Gynaecology World Congress, in Barcelona.
The Contendam team had said as recently as 22 September it had events secured until 2018 and was “looking forward to embracing the opportunities that lie ahead”.
Calls to both London and Glasgow office numbers listed on the Contendam website were met with ‘temporary out of order’ messages.
