National Events Month (NEMO) launches today (1 October) and is a campaign aimed at helping the UK win more international events and increase the wider public’s support and awareness of the importance of winning such events.
The campaign leaders say they will promote more widely statistics that claim the UK meetings and events sector is worth £39.1bn and sustains 530,000 jobs and 25,000 businesses.
The Prime Minister David Cameron has backed the campaign and Helen Grant, Minister for Tourism, will also speak up for NEMO, alongside Campaign Director Alistair Turner and Sehar Graham, who runs the event management course at Manchester University.
NEMO is part of the annual Britain for Events campaign and the October initiative will focus on four sectors of the industry.
The campaign will see October split up into four weeks, with the first looking at Conferences, Congresses & Large Meetings, and culminating in the Liberal Democrats Party Conference at the SECC in Glasgow.
The second week, which celebrates Exhibition and Experiential events, will include the IP EXPO Europe, where Tim Berners-Lee, will be delivering the opening keynote on 8 October, at Excel London.
The last two weeks will look at Outdoor, Cultural, Musical and Sporting Events, and Corporate Hospitality, respectively, and will see the Association of Independent Festival Organisers’ Annual Congress take place in Cardiff, and the Showman’s Show in Newbury, as well as the second NFL fixture in London.
Each host event will hold a mini reception, as part of the wider event, which will acknowledge the quality of events across these sectors and throughout the UK. The campaign is also encouraging more events to register on nationaleventsmonth.co.uk and to use #NEMO to support the campaign.
“We’re thrilled to announce the kick-off of National Events Month in October, kicking off with Conferences and Meetings Week,” says Campaign Director Alistair Turner.
