Paul Wakefield has been appointed the new Head of Marketing and Commercial at destination marketing organisation, Marketing Edinburgh.
Having spent over 14 years in marketing, communications and business senior management with the likes of property firm Bell Ingram, Maximillion Events and landowner body, Scottish Land & Estates, Wakefield joins with a brief to drive greater private investment from the city’s businesses and organisations, as well as to develop further the new Marketing Edinburgh Corporate Partnership Programme.
“I’m delighted to join the team at Marketing Edinburgh. I’m very clear on what needs to be done to strengthen the organisation and what our partners’ expectations are,” he said.
“Marketing Edinburgh is building momentum, and we need to be even more commercially focussed and build stronger partnerships to ensure that we have the funds to market this amazing city in the way it deserves. I’m looking forward to getting on with the job and delivering outstanding work.”
Originally from London, Wakefield settled in Scotland in 2000 and lives in Edinburgh with his family.
He told CN: “Last year Convention Edinburgh, the business tourism arm of Marketing Edinburgh, generated a record number of conference wins worth over £90.1m to the local economy. Thanks to the city’s world-class facilities, Edinburgh has never been more popular with event organisers. It’s a strong result but one we hope to surpass in this financial year.
“Core to our business development strategy is raising awareness across the world of Edinburgh as a leading conference destination, particularly in North America and Europe. There are some exciting new developments underway which we plan to reveal at IMEX America in Las Vegas when we exhibit there in October.”
John Donnelly, CEO for Marketing Edinburgh, said: “Paul’s blend of marketing and commercial abilities, are quite unique and exactly what are required for the expanded new position. Marketing Edinburgh plays a pivotal role in strengthening the city’s promotion both in the UK and internationally as a world-leading investment and visitor capital. To succeed we need to be working more effectively together. Paul’s fresh and collaborative attitude and approach is going to take the promotion of Edinburgh to the next level.”
