New bridge connects Exhibition Centre Liverpool to ACC Liverpool

Construction firm ISG has successfully connected ACC Liverpool to its new interconnected sister venue Exhibition Centre Liverpool with the installation of a 30 tonne steel link bridge.

The operation to transfer 12 pre-fabricated steel sections to Liverpool, assemble them on site and lift the giant structure into place is part of the £66+m Exhibition Centre Liverpool and associated four-star Pullman hotel development on the city’s waterfront.

The design and build scheme started on site in January with the facility due to open in September 2015. The new 36-metre link bridge will connect the new facilities to the existing ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena.

Designed by the project’s architect, Denton Corker Marshall, and engineered by Booth King, the bridge will be clad in glass and enhances views across the UNESCO World Heritage site waterfront.

ACC Liverpool Chief Executive Bob Prattey said: “The pedestrian bridge symbolises the next stage in the continuing success of ACC Liverpool as we join our existing building with an ambitious new facility.

“We are pleased with the progress made on site and the walkway signifies another step in this project to enhance Liverpool’s waterfront.”

Alan McCarthy-Wyper, Managing Director of ISG’s construction business, said: “Whilst the bridge will not be handed over until the development is complete, the positioning of the steelwork marks a major milestone for this project.

“The bridge will form a physical and metaphorical link between Liverpool’s past and its future which will become a lasting landmark for the city.

“The operation to lift the structure into position today has taken precision planning and project management, all of which have paid dividends in the end result,” McCarthy-Wyper added.

ACC Liverpool recently expanded its production team with five new recruits.
