John Longworth, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, has commended Telford’s multi-million investment programme following a recent tour of the region.
Longworth praised those driving the £50m Heart of Telford Southwater development forward, including Meet Telford and Shropshire, the official convention bureau for the region, which forms part of the growth strategy that aims to position Telford as a leading convention centre.
Hosted by Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, the tour showcased the region’s business economy and the commitment to investment and development in Telford. The new flagship Convention Quarter within the development received particular praise from Longworth, according to the bureau.
“There is no better time for investment and initiatives like the new Heart of Telford development show a firm commitment to supporting the conference and events market now and in the years ahead,” Longworth said. “Many in the large cities have a ‘Disney’ view of counties like Shropshire, but the skills, expertise, and now facilities, are in place to help it become a leader in the business tourism world.”
Sarah Bird, Business Tourism Manager at Meet Telford and Shropshire, said: “We’re delighted with the commendation such a respected figurehead in the business world gave Telford’s business tourism, not only recognising its investment, but also citing it as a thriving convention hub and leading conference and events destination nationally.
“Business is booming off the back of the development already with the destination seeing a peak in large-scale events, exhibitions and association conventions choosing Telford and Shropshire,” she added.
