Marketing Edinburgh’s Convention Bureau (MECB) will this month join The Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) and the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa on a trip dedicated to attracting large business events and conferences from Chicago.
The visit coincides with the launch of United Airlines’ non-stop Edinburgh to Chicago service, and the Edinburgh group will meet with a number of corporate event planners during their time in the States, where the focus will be largely on associations.
MECB Sales Executive Laura Henry, Rory Archibald from the EICC Sales and Business Development team and Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa Account Manager Stephanie Zahra will be promoting Edinburgh as a conference destination and manning a stand at the Controlled Release Society Annual Meeting, which recently confirmed it will come to Edinburgh in July 2015. The conference is expected to bring 1,700 delegates to the city, and deliver an economic impact of £4.1m.
Lesley Williams, Head of Business Tourism at MECB said: “As a fellow ‘best city’, both Chicago and Edinburgh are accredited as excellent places to hold conferences and conventions.
“The launch of United Airlines’ new route means that is now easier than ever for Chicago delegates to enjoy the benefits of the £110m investment which has taken place to expand and enhance Edinburgh’s business tourism facilities over recent years.”
MECB recently announced its strongest year to date, generating conference wins worth over £90.1m to the local economy.
Attracting new conferences and events from North America is a key growth objective for Marketing Edinburgh as part of its ongoing three-year business strategy.
Over 109 conferences and events are due to take place in Edinburgh between 2014 and 2021, estimated to generate over £117m for the local economy. The list includes international conventions such as the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation event in 2016 and the Cleft Lip/Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies conference in 2021.
CN reported 10 July that Edinburgh launched what it claimed to be the world’s first Delegate Rewards scheme this month.
