Local authorities join forces to promote SE Wales for events

The local authorities of Newport, Monmouthshire and Torfaen have joined forces to promote South East Wales to the business tourism and events sector.
Following a grant from the regional tourism partnership, Capital Region Tourism, the local authorities are aiming to generate additional business tourism spend within the region.
The initiative will be showcased for the first time at The Meetings Show 2014 in London in July (Stand E41).
“Business Tourism is an extremely important part of our economy, supporting thousands of jobs, and we’d like to grow this significantly. In particular, through increased awareness of our experience and credibility within the industry, we hope to drive more business events to the area,” said Newport City Council Head of Tourism Lynne Richards.
International conferences in the region include the NATO conference in September and sporting events including The Ryder Cup, the World Paralympic Games and the British On Road Cycling championships.
The Welsh Government recently announced it will match the funding for the initial design and planning stage for a proposed convention centre development at Newport’s five-star golf hotel, Celtic Manor Resort.
