Meeting Professionals International (MPI) UK & Ireland recently hosted its third annual look at the economy with representatives from Capita Travel and Events, BSI, George P Johnson and Zibrant in attendance.
In the latest MPI Learns event entitled ’What’s New for 2014 – The Outlook for the Events Industry’, speaker Chris Williamson, Chief Economist at Markit, delivered an overview of the economy and the predicted outlook for 2014.
Williamson based this outlook on the Purchasing Managers Index survey which Markit has been producing for more than 20 years.
“The presentation was invaluable in giving an insight into the economic factors for the year ahead that inevitably will affect our industry,” said Jim Quintrell, Head of Account Management – Meetings and Events at Capita Travel and Events. “The better we understand the market conditions that can impact our clients budgetary decisions the more informed our event solutions and recommendations are.”
In related news, MPI UK & Ireland has awarded the inaugural Vanessa Cotton Scholarship to Olivia Pole-Evans.
Karen Walters, Director at Eventful Connections, headed the judging panel which also featured Sarah Fleming, MD of Sarah Fleming Associates and Jane Hague, Head of Corporate Account Development at Excel London.
“Olivia impressed the judges by her focus and understanding of our industry,” said Walters. “Olivia has already accumulated a strong track record in event management, co-ordinating a host of different festivals and congresses, while studying for a degree in event management at Leeds Metropolitan University. As an MPI Young Achiever, she has a clear mind set for her career path and is looking to excel as a PCO, which was a sector close to Vanessa’s heart.”
Miguel Neves, MPI Chapter President added: “The scholarship is a unique opportunity to empower student members who have the drive and passion to make their mark in the meetings industry. In Vanessa’s memory we are rewarding a student who has demonstrated outstanding communication skills and a strong desire for personal development through the MPI Foundation Scholarship. Olivia will now reap the benefits from the quality education and valuable connections to the global MPI network”.
The Vanessa Cotton Scholarship was created to recognise the ambitious and bright students, graduating from event management degrees and supporting their first steps in to the industry. The Scholarship also pays homage to the late Vanessa Cotton who played a significant leadership role in the professionalism of the meetings and events sector both in the UK and internationally.
