Conference News and Mash Media are celebrating after winning three journalism awards and being shortlisted for five at this year’s Business Travel Journalism Awards. The awards ceremony was held at London’s Bloomsbury Ballroom on Friday night (11 October).
Conference News took home the inaugural ‘Editorial Team of the Year – Meetings & Events’ gong with CN’s Deputy Editor, Sarah O’Donnell, claiming for the third consecutive year the ‘Best Use of Social Media in Business Travel Journalism’ award. She also won the final award of the evening: ‘The Journalists’ Business Travel or Meetings & Events Journalist of the Year’, which was voted for on the night by the other journalists in attendance.
CN’s Reporter, Zoe Vernor, was shortlisted for ‘Best Newcomer to Business Travel Journalism’; CN’s Managing Editor Paul Colston was shortlisted for ‘Meetings & Events Editor of the Year’ as well as ‘The Journalists’ Business Travel or Meetings & Events Journalist of the Year’, and O’Donnell was also shortlisted for ‘Meetings & Events Features Journalist of the Year’.
“This is a small team with a big output, and one that’s clearly well established in the sector,” said the judging panel. “The judges were all impressed with the output from three people with monthly and quarterly magazines and linked websites, plus specials for outside clients. The panel were also impressed with their innovation within, and use of, social media channels.”
Speaking of O’Donnell’s awards, the judging panel said: “We felt that head and shoulders above the pack was Sarah, who is winning this award for third year in a row. Her passion, innovation and drive shine through her work, and she used great breadth of channels, all of which boast good content which is updated regularly.
“Sarah O’Donnell’s nomination said she embodies all the best characteristics of the modern all-round journalist, with a strong personal brand. Since being promoted to Deputy Editor, she continues to drive forward on all fronts. Sarah is described as a first-rate journalist and colleague; bright, enthusiastic and up for any task, really the MICE journalist that roars.”

The awards are organised and promoted by event management agency, Carlson Wagonlit Travel.
