Airport capacity: Is it stifling inbound UK events industry business?

On 8 October, the Head
of the Airports Commission, Sir Howard Davies, concluded that
continuing to only rely on existing runways would render travel to and
from UK airports more difficult, having a negative impact on the
economy. Another solution suggested is to shift short-haul domestic
flights to high speed rail. So far, Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and
Birmingham have already submitted plans for expansion. A decision,
however, is not expected until 2015.

This issue has led me to raise the following question: What effect does limited airport capacity have on the UK events industry?

Rival
airports throughout Europe, which have undergone recent expansions, are
now capable of offering a more agreeable travel experience. The UK runs
the risk of losing its position as a leading country in which to
conduct business and as the “gateway to Europe” to international rivals,
such as the Netherlands, where Schiphol Airport has proved an
increasingly popular site for business travel.

If companies are
led to select alternative destinations to London, or another part of the
UK, in view of inefficient travel infrastructure, then the events
industry risks witnessing a decrease in inbound business, particularly
when it comes to hosting international conferences. Similarly, the
delivery of internal events becomes limited at multiple locations,
outside London.

Clearly, there is a need for changes to be made
to meet the steady growth of both domestic and international travel, in
order to continue populating hotels and convention centres with
conferences and meetings across the country on an equally profitable
basis. The UK must maintain its high reputation for international events
and aim to rapidly surpass Germany as the leading destination in
Europe.
