Nottingham has won its bid to host what is claimed to be the UK’s largest annual education conference in January 2014. The North of England Education conference is expected to see 450 delegates from schools and academies, higher and further education and local authorities descend on the city and the Nottingham Conference Centre (NCC).
The conference will feature a three-day programme, with a focus on the themes of education: innovation, creativity and employability. Speakers already confirmed to attend the event include Lord David Puttnam, Sir Michael Wilshaw, David Laws MP, Stephen Twigg MP and Children’s Commissioner Dr Maggie Atkinson.
Nottingham City Council, The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University have been working closely since May 2013 to develop plans for the conference, with Carillion now announced as the headline sponsor.
The event is expected to bring an economic impact of £700k to the city.
“We are proud to welcome this conference to Nottingham,” says Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, Councillor David Mellen, from Nottingham City Council: “There is no doubt it is regarded as the premier education conference in the country. It is one of the most influential gatherings of the education calendar. The whole point of the conference is to discuss the vital, and sometimes controversial, issues which shape education provision. Even after 110 years the conference is still breaking new ground so it will be well received in our ambitious, forward looking city.”
Nottingham Event Team, the convention bureau for the city and Nottinghamshire, is working closely with the event organisers to make the event a success, sourcing preferential rates at city hotels and discounts at city businesses for conference delegates.
“We want to ensure that delegates receive a warm welcome to the city, and are working with local businesses to ensure the best possible experience for the North East of England Education conference 2013 visitors while they are here,” says Director of Nottingham Event Team, David Randall.
