GM of George Hotel in Edinburgh retires, in steps Graeme Barclay

After 40 years in the hospitality industry David Welch (pictured, right) has retired as GM of Edinburgh’s George Hotel, passing the torch onto Graeme Barclay.
Welch joined the George in 2005 shortly after it had been taken over by hotel operator PH Hotels and went on to manage a major £20m refurbishment programme at the hotel. Since then he has taken the hotel to win accolades including Edinburgh Hotel of the Year.
“I’ve had a fantastic career and have loved my time here at the George, however, I’m looking forward to having time to relax and spend more time with my family,” says Welch. “I’m planning to spend some time travelling and I’ll still be working with PH Hotels in a consultancy capacity.”
Barclay, originally from Glasgow, has been GM at the five-star St David’s Hotel & Spa in Cardiff, also part of the PH Hotels group, for the past two years.
“After a few years away it’s great to be moving back to Scotland to take on the role of GM at the George – it’s a wonderful hotel and I’m looking forward to working closely with the team here to continue delivering a first class experience for guests on each and every stay,” says Barclay.
PH Hotels has 23 properties in its collection ranging from countryside retreats to city centre properties.
