York’s Barbican Centre is to host the Liberal Democrats’ Spring Conference in March 2014.
The three-day conference is expected to attract more than 1,000 delegates and the city’s Novotel hotel will be the party conference HQ for the duration of the event.
VisitYork4Meetings, the conference arm of Visit York, welcomed the news as a major coup for the city’s business tourism sector. The bureau attributes the decision to hold the conference in York to the VisitYork4Meeting’s ‘York Minster to Westminster’ showcase, held at the Houses of Parliament in March 2013.
Jane, Lady Gibson, Chairman of Visit York, said: “In 2013, Visit York launched a major new offensive to put York on the map for business events.
“Winning this bid demonstrates how far we have come and we will continue to punch above our weight to ensure events and conference organisers see York as one of the most attractive cities in the UK in which to do business.”
Part of the Visit York campaign included a special supplement on the city published in Conference News in the spring.
The Lib Dems have previously held their Spring Conference in Liverpool, Glasgow and Brighton and the VisitYork4Meetings team believes it will boost York’s economy by £600,000.
Laura Freer, Business Tourism Manager for VisitYork4Meetings (pictured left), said: “Not only is the Lib Dems conference a fantastic opportunity to showcase the city’s venues to an influential audience, but it is also a chance for York to build a reputation for holding a conference of this size and status. Winning this bid further strengthens our reputation and makes it clear that York can compete at a national level.”
Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, said he was “delighted” the party’s Spring Conference will be held in York for the first time next year.
“We’re helping to create new jobs all around the country and York is not only a beautiful city, but it’s also a great place to do business. I’m sure all our delegates will enjoy a great conference and a great stay in York.”
