Two people were found dead, 26 April, in the swimming pool at country house hotel Down Hall in Hatfield Heath. The venue, located on the Hertfordshire and Essex border, is close to Stansted Airport and famously hosted Jade Goodie’s wedding.
Two wedding parties were reportedly using the venue for receptions on the Saturday evening when the deaths are believed to have occurred, although initial reports indicated that the deceased were not guests at either.
Staff reportedly tried to rescue the couple who could not be resuscitated. Police were treating the deaths as “unexplained” pending post mortem examinations, although it is not believed anyone else is being sought in connection with the investigation.
One guest was reported in The Times newspaper as saying staff had been visibly disturbed by the events.
“The receptionist couldn’t stop shaking,” said Louise Saunders, 47, from Hertfordshire. “If you asked any staff anything they would say nothing, just that we were safe. They were trying to make everything normal, but it was obvious it wasn’t.”
Chief Inspector Nick Lee confirmed that the couple, the man believed to be in his 30s and the woman in her 20s, had been staying together and had been found unconscious in the water.
Down Hall provides a big backdrop for large functions and conferences and the mansion dates back to 1322.
The venue sits in 110 acres of woodland and landscaped gardens which provide space for teambuilding.
